FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.
We find that there are several questions that get asked time and again.
We hope that on this page we have provided answers to the most frequently asked ones.
However, if there is a question that we have not covered here that you would like the answer to, please get in touch with us via our Contact Page, and we will be happy to help.
1. WHY ARE EPE, PRISCILLA OR LISA NOT INTERESTED IN HELPING TO SAVE THE RANCH – HAVE YOU ASKED THEM?
Since our campaign began back in August 2010 we have e-mailed and written to EPE, Priscilla and Lisa Marie on many occasions.
We are led to understand that EPE are currently concentrating all their efforts on the area immediately around Graceland and are not looking to expand into other areas – ie the ranch. They are fully aware of our organisation and do not have a problem with our efforts to save the ranch. Here at the Circle G Foundation we will continue to keep EPE informed of our progress and sincerely hope that in the future we will be able to work together.
We do not know why either Priscilla or Lisa Marie has not responded to our letters and e-mails. It is very difficult to know if they actually even get to see them, the only way to be sure would be to put the letters directly into their hands – something we have not been able to do yet, but we will keep trying. We do always remind people that there may be contractual obligations etc that could prevent them from becoming involved even if they wanted to.
2, WHO OWNS THE RANCH NOW AND IS IT FOR SALE?
The ranch is currently owned by the McLemore family and is for sale. The current asking price is $3.9 million USD for the 154 acre property. We all realise that this is well above the current valuation for a property of that size in the State of Mississippi – the ‘Elvis’ factor will always mean that the price is somewhat exaggerated. However, when our campaign began in 2010 the asking price was an astounding $6.9 million USD!
3. WHAT ARE THE AIMS OF THE CIRCLE G FOUNDATION – ARE YOU LOOKING TO BUY THE RANCH?
Our aims and ambitions are to secure the future of the Circle G Ranch, prevent any further deterioration of the structures, then work to create ‘Our Vision For The Ranch’, (see our separate page for full details) and in doing so provide a unique visitor experience for Elvis fans, facilities for disabled & disadvantaged children and service veterans and provide leisure facilities for the local community – continuing Elvis’ charitable and humanitarian legacy.
To do this we need to either find a buyer(s). Ideally that would be someone, individual or group, who would work with us to achieve our goals.
We urgently need to find investors/sponsors/donors to raise sufficient funds to purchase the ranch – time is running out and before long, if the ranch is left to deteriorate at the present rate – we will have nothing left to save
As the ranch is so unique in its conception, both as a new Elvis Presley attraction and as a facility for the local community and a wider visitor audience, it is somewhat difficult to forecast trading results etc. However, using the Birthplace in Tupelo as our ‘model’, it is possible to outline and draw parallels between the two sites and thus provide some baseline statistics – see Our Vision For The Ranch page for more details.
We would hope to utilise the enthusiasm and knowledge of Elvis fans and locals to provide volunteer staffing which would help make it a totally unique experience for visitors.
Further development of on-site facilities to provide the suggested leisure facilities outlined in Our Vision For The Ranch would take place as and when funding/investment became available – a rolling programme of development.
We are constantly assessing the situation and the possibility of purchasing a portion of the property, the ranch house, cross, bridge etc., however the current owners are somewhat reluctant to do this – for obvious reasons.
4. WHERE IS THE RANCH EXACTLY?
The Circle G Ranch is situated on Goodman Road Horn Lake. Horn Lake lies over the border in Mississippi, just a 25 – 30 minute drive away from Memphis. Horn Lake is situated in historic DeSoto County. Those of you who have been able to visit the ranch will agree that the peace and beauty of the area make it easy to understand why Elvis used it as a place to ‘escape’ to!
To find out more about the history of the ranch take a look at our ‘History’ page.
NB. It is important to remember that if you do have the opportunity to visit the ranch it is, at the moment, private property and you should be fully aware and not breech the laws of trespass.
5. WHO SUPPORTS THE CAMPAIGN?
We have had messages of support from many people in the Elvis World
Barbara Hearn, Sonny West, Larry Geller, Linda Thompson, Joe Esposito,
Lowell Heyes, DJ Fontanna, James Burton…..and more
We have the full support of Mayor Nat Baker of Horn Lake and also Senator Thad Cochran, who continue to play an active part in our efforts.
Mr Brian Hicks Director of the DeSoto Museum is an active supporter and we continue to explore all avenues to expand our dialogue with organisations and individuals who might possibly help us achieve our goals.
Many Elvis fan clubs around the world carry information and links to our website and we have had coverage in many well respected Elvis publications around the world as well as TV and media coverage in the USA and UK.
6 HOW CAN I HELP – AND WHY SHOULD I?
Let’s answer the second part of your question first!
Do you care about Elvis and his legacy?
As an Elvis fan we would imagine your answer is ‘yes’.
In recent years we have lost many significant Elvis sites and we are in real danger of the Circle G Ranch, an important pieces of his ‘story’, just disappearing without a trace.
As we’ve said – EPE for the moment are not interested.
The only way we can hope to save the ranch is by us, Elvis’ fans, working together to achieve something amazing in his name!
Ok – so Elvis only owned the ranch for a short period of time!
But just stop to consider what a period of time that was in his life.
- A newly married man – he loved the ranch enough to spend part of his honeymoon there. Here’s an amazing quote from Priscilla (Elvis By The Presley’s) that says it all – she’s speaking of watching Elvis on the ranch
“There was Elvis walking Rising Sun, his Golden Palomino. I saw them as silhouettes against the darkening sky. Elvis was walking slowly, I could practically hear him breathe. His breath was easy, his body relaxed. At that moment I was convinced that my husband had actually found peace.”
- An expectant father – we all know how much family meant to Elvis – just imagine the thoughts going through his head as he rode the ranch in peace and solitude.
- At a crossroads – Elvis’ movie contracts were coming to an end, which way would his career go? What would he do next? These thoughts and more must have occupied his mind a great deal at the time he owned the ranch, and what better place to consider his options – the place he could “get away from the incessant demands of his career” – another quote from Priscilla!
We know that he never lost his fondness for the place; I have spoken to several people who he took there long after he’d sold it to proudly show them ‘his ranch’ – and others with whom he fondly reminisced on the happy times spent there.
SO….HOW CAN YOU HELP?
First of all – as Elvis fans we have an amazing network of communication. Help us spread the word of the plight of the ranch to your Elvis friends. Contact Us and we will e-mail you our flyers, take them along to meetings, events, it’s surprising how many fans aren’t aware that we are in danger of losing the ranch forever –
SIGN OUR PETITION to have the ranch recognised as of Historic Interest.
If we are successful in doing this then we stand a much-increased chance of securing the ranch’s future.
Or Contact Us and ask for some printed petition sheets – take them along to fan club meetings, events etc. Help makea difference!
DONATIONS & MERCHANDISE – We have some great Circle G Foundation merchandise available through our Store page – why not check them out.
What will it cost me?
We are more than happy to accept donations of £1, $1, €1 – or whatever you feel you would like to contribute.
Let’s face it – if every Elvis fan gave just £1, $1 or a €1 – we’d have enough to buy the ranch and more besides!!
All ‘Donations’ are held securely in the CGF account until such time they can be spent on the ranch. From day one we have stated that if for some reason, whatever that may be, we are not able to spend the money on the Circle G Ranch then ALL monies held in the CGF account will be donated to an existing Elvis related charity and given in his name. No one here at the CGF is here for personal gain – just for the love of Elvis and his memory.
Donors are listed on our Role of Honour on our website (unless requested otherwise) and we hope that once the ranch is secured that a permanent marker will be established on site.
